Goodbye Abe Osheroff (October 24, 1915 - April 6, 2008)
On May 29, 2008, at Seattle's Town Hall, there was a memorial service for Abe Osheroff, 92, who died
last month. He was a carpenter, political activist who fought with the Abraham Lincoln Brigade in the Spanish
Civil War at the onset of WWII. He went on to serve in the Army in that war; stood up to white supremacists
in Mississippi during the 1960's; and recently actively protested the war in Iraq. To learn more about
Abe, and find out how you can contribute: Abe Osheroff
One of our contributing editors, Rita Fritz Amer, interviewed Abe in 2002. We published a three-part
conversation with Abe over three issues: Part One, Raven, Vol. 11, No. 1, covers his involvement with the
Young Communist League, union organizing, and his experiences in Nicaragua A Conversation with Abe Osheroff .
Part Two, Raven, Vol. 11, No. 2, covers
his work as a Civil Rights activist. Part Three, Raven, Vol. 11, No. 3, covers the time he spent
in Spain as part of the Abraham Lincoln Brigade, and his service in the US Army during WWII.
We'll have a memorial to Abe in our upcoming issue on Legacies.

Louise Dovell Poetry/Spoken Word Award
On September 25, 2007, at a Raven reading at Richard Hugo House, we presented the first (hopefully annual) Louise Dovell
Poetry/Spoken Word Award to Seattle-based poet MARION KIMES, along with $100.00.
The Award reflects the spirit of storytelling/spoken word poetry, and honors Louise who died of cancer in 2006.
Stay tuned for upcoming information on our plans for 2008. Happy
New Year to all our readers and supportors.
