Mark Sullo: Artist Bio & Statement My work is intricately detailed and meticulously collaged from various print media. I lift images from their source with transparent tape then cut and paste the pieces, often on top of printed matter to further the layering of visual information. The process of making this art work is spontaneous and instinctive, unfolding one element at a time as I find the imagery necessary to complete each work. I almost always take a narrative and/or thematic approach, and combined with color and composition considerations I regard each piece as a conversation and a puzzle. I gained my interest in the arts through an early exposure to photography. I grew up with a darkroom in my house and used it by the time I was twelve, and used cameras even before that. Although none of my current collage work contains my own photographs, it is a long time involvement and passion for photography as well as the engagement of perception and attention to detail induced by the photographic process which shapes my work. I also grew up in a house with a room dedicated to recorded music. My two older brothers and my father each had eclectic taste in music. In 1990 I established Wall of Sound record store on the corner of Second and Bell, which I still own and operate. I regard my extensive exposure to music and sound as a direct influence to my creative work as a visual artist. I have exclusively exhibited color laser prints. These prints are color balanced on acid free paper and archivally mounted. With a background in photography and all of my source materials coming from printed matter, it feels appropriate to treat the work as multiples and return them to print. Thanks for your interest.
