"I
am called Catalina. Mi madre was una bruja, a
powerful witch. The good kind of power that is
given to you in the womb. She could fly
nightinside out...she healed with herbs and had
many lovers. One of them wasmi padre, a poor man
distinguished and enriched only by the fact that
shedesired him. Desire, she told me, is a map
without boundaries, whereas lovehas it limits. Brujas
learn about borders, crossing the red-hearted
desert under thebleached moon and feeling the
stars' heat on the fur of their heads."

Desert", stories of theEsperanza sisters, in"Throwing fire at the Sun,water at the

Teaching
Credentials
What do I teach?
Native American literature,
Creative Writing: Poetry
Would like to teach:
Creative writing for women
Native American Women's lit
Where do I teach:
Usually I teach university
level classes. Since I justmoved to the west
side, I've decided to substitute teach at the
high schoollevel because it offers me a lot of
flexibility. In the future I'd liketo teach
university classes again.
Describe my
philosophy of
teaching:
"Poetry not only
reconnectsus to the world, it emanates from the
connection of the world to the sensesand the
imagination that remains"...W.S. Merwin and
"There isbut one history and that is the
soul's"...Yeats
My favorite book to
teach from is "The Languageof Life" by
Bill Moyer. It's a collection of interviews of
poets whotalk about their work and gives examples
of the poems.
Describe your
particular teaching methods:
Read, write, discuss, rewrite, share, read, write,
discuss, rewrite...
How do you know when
your students are learning?
l. When they start asking the right questions2.
When they have integrated other's commentsinto
their own critiquing
3.When they become excited
about writing and/or reading
4. When I'm excited
about their work
What level of
students do you prefer?1. adult/college
2. high school
Prefer group situations
vs mentoring one on one
Who has influenced
me?
In college I was taught by
the Irish poet JimMcAuley who invited me to tour
with him in Idaho, where we read with DickHugo.
Jim gave me a strong critical education, in
regards to my own work, and the awareness of
Shakespeare and Yeats. Dick Hugo influenced my
senseof locality and tone. In later years I have
loved the poetry of Paz, Neruda, early Japanese
and Chinese women poets, Linda Hogan, Joy Harjo,
and manyother poets/writers of ethnic heritage.
I'm not so excited by most of themainstream
American poets nowadays.
How long have I
taught?
Over 20 years in high
school, alternative highschool,ed clinic, as a
poet in the schools, as a voluteer art teacher
for my daughter'sschool, at colleges and
universities, special workshops.
