"I want to explain about desire. Not that quick,
explosive moment associated with wishes. Like wishing for a million dollars.
I'm not talking about fantasy. I mean desire in its most complex form, perpetual
longing, a dull, unceasing ache. I could never put the feeling into exact
words when I was younger, identify exactly what it was that gnawed at me,
made me itchy and restless. But there was never a time when the longing
wasn't with me. It was a bleak loneliness that nothing every satisfied.
I describe as perpetual longing. There was also the perpetual hope that
one day the longing would cease."
