Elizabeth (Detonator Beth) Lawrence, June 17, 1957–February 12, 2015: with an operatic voice and quirky improvisation, D.B. lit up Seattle’s arts scene in the 1980s, 1990s and beyond, winning her moniker by sparking others’ bursts of creativity. This collection contains 194 photos and drawings of dogzes, katzes, other critters, and animals rescued by D.B. and her many friends.

This book is a tribute to her generous spirit from some of the souls she touched, and you can see her love on every page. My favorite thing about it is that all the dogzes and katzes seem to be squared off in such a way as to fit neatly into D.B.’s world of Boxitania. More room that way for more creatures to love.

Author of Spirits of the Ordinary, A Tale of Casas Grandes

Dogzes and Katzes is a delightful book full of fanciful sketches of dogs and cats, sure to appeal to animal lovers everywhere. The backstory here is a unique tale of friendships and caring relationships that developed amongst a community of artistic friends—drawn to one another through their love of animals—which centers on their hilarious escapades and loving tribute to the artist, known amongst them as Detonator Beth. Their stories, told in both prose and photographs, unfold both tragic and joyful in these pages.

In Seattle, around the mid-1980s to mid-1990s, there were groups of merry noisemakers and poets, gathering in un-gentrified taverns, bars, and sweat-equity-made performance venues: The Five-O Tavern, OK Hotel, Two Bells Tavern, Rainbow Tavern, The Globe, The Ditto, Triangle Tavern, Weathered Wall, Squid Row, Red Sky Poetry Theater, and on and on. Elizabeth Detonator Beth Lawrence was a noticeable part of this scene, performing with the Black Cat Orchestra, at Alternative to Loud Boats, at Eveline Mueller’s Kitsch and Kaboodle, and in the Fremont Solstice Parade (with her hilarious Boxitania, an “imaginary quadratic city on wheels”).
