Stealing Light: A Raven Chronicles AnthologySelected Work from Summer, 1991 — Fall, 1996, publisher Raven Chronicles Press, edited by Kathleen Alcalá, Phoebe Bosché, Paul Hunter, and Stephanie Lawyer, with Matt Briggs and Tiffany Midge. The anthology includes the poems, essays, fiction, interviews, and storytelling of 92 writers, and the artwork / illustrations of 26 artists.

The Raven Chronicles began in 1991, when Kathleen Alcalá and Philip Red Eagle guest-edited several King County Arts Commission Newsletters. They realized that there was a lack of diverse, multicultural writing being published in Seattle and the Northwest region in general. They thought: let’s start our own magazine!

We chose the name Raven because—as we learned from Upper Skagit storyteller Vi Hilbert (now deceased)—in northern Northwest Coast mythology Raven is a powerful figure who transforms the world, by accident or on purpose, yet he is also a trickster, a shape-shifter who is mischievous, often selfish, but brings light to the world. We added Chronicles because we intended the magazine to be a chronicle of how time passes, chronos, and us with it.

From 1991 to 2018, for twenty-seven years, we published forty-eight issues of Raven, from Vol. 1, No. 1, Summer/Fall 1991 to Vol. 26, Last Call, Summer 2018. As Raven Chronicles Press, we will continue to publish work which embodies the cultural diversity of writers and artists living in the Pacific Northwest, and elsewhere.
